  • Tears flowing as verdict read, victims speak out

Photo By Michael Tighe, Associated Press writer
DEDHAM -- John C. Salvi III, an aspiring hairdresser who envisioned himself a warrior fighting conspiracies against Catholics, was convicted yesterday of murdering two women at Boston-area abortion clinics.
In a trial closing that brought tears to all sides in the case, the jury rejected Mr. Salvi's insanity defense and found him guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of armed assault with intent to murder for wounding of five other people.
The drama was extended as victims and their relatives read statements after the verdicts. More...

By Jack Stewardson, Standard-Times staff writer
NEW BEDFORD -- More than a century ago, New Bedford shared a cultural bond with Alaska's North Slope, but the connection slipped away with the decline of the whaling industry.

Former child servant recalls harsh life, counts herself 'lucky'

Photo By William Corey, Standard-Times staff writer
WAREHAM -- As a child servant, Rose Cardoza's employers would beat her if she was found with a book in her hand.
Reading was not something a South Carolina plantation owner wanted his 6-year-old servant wasting her time doing. After all, there were more important chores, such as scrubbing the floors and washing the clothes -- all of which entitled Mrs. Cardoza's mother to $3 worth of sugar or flour each month.
"I considered myself a slave," Mrs. Cardoza said. More...

Ah, the Easter bonnet with all the frills upon it. There was a time when it ranked right up there with bunnies, painted eggs and the grand parade.

The big names missed out on a fantastic race

It may have been the best run race in the 19-year history of the New Bedford Half-Marathon, but the $64,000 question -- make that the $1,000 question -- was still: Where were the name runners?
The New Bedford Half-Marathon Committee dug deep down into its pockets to come up with $3,500 in prize money this year, hoping to take advantage of the 100th Boston Marathon April 15.
With a carrot of $1,000 for the men's and women's winners, the race committee was hoping some notable marathoners, particularly in the Boston area, would make the hour's drive to New Bedford for a good tuneup and a chance to pick up an easy grand.
That was the thinking, anyway. More...

PHILADELPHIA -- Dennis Rodman's latest tirade will cost him six games and more than $200,000. It could cost the Chicago Bulls a chance to become the first NBA team to win 70 games.

"Physical assaults on referees cannot and will not be tolerated under any circumstances," NBA vice president Rod Thorn said. More...

Blow 3-0 lead in tie against Sharks

Photo By Doug Chapman, New England Sports Service
BOSTON -- If the streaking Boston Bruins are going to reach the Stanley Cup playoffs for a record 29th consecutive season, then victories against the National Hockey League's lesser lights are an absolute must.
The San Jose Sharks -- last night's opponents at the FleetCenter -- certainly fit that bill. The Sharks are the worst defensive team in the league and are dead last in the Western Conference, a full 33 games below .500. More...
